Motorcycle Rental Requirements in the Philippines: Complete Guide for Locals and Foreigners

Blogs

Renting a motorcycle in the Philippines is straightforward — if you know what to bring. Walk into a shop without the right documents and you may lose hours sorting it out. Walk in prepared and you can be on the road within minutes.

This guide covers every requirement you need to meet: the IDs, the license rules, the insurance choices, and the policies that separate a great rental experience from a frustrating one. Whether you’re a Filipino rider or a foreign visitor, everything below applies to renting from Rent2Ride Manila — one of Makati’s most established motorcycle rental shops.

What You Need to Rent a Motorcycle: Quick Summary

For Filipino Residents

  • Minimum 2 major government-issued IDs
  • Supporting ID (credit/debit card, work ID, school ID, library card, or any ID with your name)
  • Valid driver’s license with motorcycle restriction (LTO Code A or A1)
  • Security deposit or insurance coverage

For Foreign Visitors

  • Minimum 2 major IDs (passport counts as one)
  • Valid driver’s license from your home country covering motorcycles
  • Security deposit or insurance coverage
  • No IDP required, no 90-day passport stamp required

Keep reading for the full details — the insurance section alone could save you tens of thousands of pesos.

ID Requirements

How Many IDs Do You Need?

All renters — Filipino residents and foreign visitors alike — must present at minimum 2 major IDs plus supporting identification.

Supporting IDs include: credit card, debit card, work ID, school ID, library card, insurance card, or any document that carries your name. You don’t need a full stack of government documents — the bar is reasonable and the same for everyone.

For Foreign Visitors: Which IDs Work?

Your passport counts as a major ID and is fully accepted. Bringing your passport as collateral is not only acceptable at Rent2Ride Manila — it’s actively encouraged. Nearly every reputable motorcycle rental company in the Philippines requires a major ID held as collateral, and a passport is a secure, universally recognized choice. Leaving it is safer than carrying it around Manila all day.

No valid 90-day passport stamp is required. If you’re a tourist on a standard 30-day entry, you can rent without any extension paperwork.

Driver’s License Requirements

For Filipino Residents

According to the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Filipino riders must hold a valid driver’s license with Restriction Code 1 (or DL Code A/A1) to legally operate a motorcycle on public roads. A car-only license is not sufficient — it does not cover motorcycles regardless of engine size.

If you’re unsure what restriction code is on your license, check the front of your physical license card. Code A or A1 authorizes motorcycle use.

For Foreign Visitors

Under Republic Act No. 4136 (the Land Transportation and Traffic Code), foreign nationals may drive in the Philippines using a valid foreign driver’s license for up to 90 days from their date of arrival. After 90 days, you would need to convert to a Philippine LTO license or apply for one locally.

At Rent2Ride Manila, a regular driver’s license from any country is accepted — no International Driving Permit (IDP) required. If your license covers motorcycle use in your home country, that’s all you need to rent.

That said, carrying your license in its original form is important. If your license is not in English, having a certified translation or IDP on hand can prevent friction at police checkpoints, even if the shop itself doesn’t require it. Riders should verify road compliance requirements with the LTO or their local embassy if they have any doubts.

What if You Don’t Have a Motorcycle License?

Rent2Ride Manila can accommodate renters without a motorcycle license. An additional ₱5,000 deposit applies. This does not override road rules — operating a motorcycle without the correct license class remains the rider’s legal responsibility — but it provides a practical path for experienced riders whose license category doesn’t explicitly cover motorcycles.

Insurance: The Most Important Requirement Most Renters Overlook

What Is TPL and What Does It Actually Cover?

Every registered motorcycle in the Philippines is required to carry Compulsory Third-Party Liability (CTPL or TPL) insurance. This is the baseline, and it only covers bodily injury to the driver of another vehicle if you cause an accident.

TPL does not cover:

  • Damage to the motorcycle you’re renting
  • Damage to other vehicles or property
  • Your own medical costs
  • Passenger medical costs

If you ride on TPL alone and damage the bike, you pay the full repair or replacement cost out of pocket. This is where most renters get caught out.

Rent2Ride Manila’s Insurance

Rent2Ride Manila offers its own insurance directly — no third-party claims process, no waiting. Coverage kicks in for all damage costs above the ₱5,000 deductible. You pay the deductible; Rent2Ride Manila absorbs everything else. Settlement happens on the spot, in minutes.

To put this in context: if a renter at most other Manila shops damages a bike worth ₱80,000, they pay ₱80,000. At Rent2Ride Manila with insurance, the same renter pays ₱5,000.

How does this compare?

  • Rentamotor: covers damage up to ₱10,000 only
  • Most other shops in the Philippines: no meaningful damage coverage at all
  • Rent2Ride Manila: covers 100% of damage above the ₱5,000 deductible

Rent2Ride Manila describes this as the best motorcycle rental insurance in the Philippines — and it’s the only rental company in the country known to offer full coverage above the deductible, settled directly without a claims process.

If You Prefer Not to Take Insurance

Renters who opt out of insurance must leave a ₱30,000 self-insure deposit. This is refundable in full when you return the bike undamaged.

Payment

Rent2Ride Manila accepts cash, GCash, and bank transfer. Credit cards are not accepted. If you’re a foreign visitor planning to pay by card, plan to have cash or set up GCash beforehand.

The Rental Process

There is no lengthy paperwork or in-person contract signing. Everything at Rent2Ride Manila runs through WhatsApp — quick, documented, and transparent.

Before you ride, Rent2Ride Manila photographs the motorcycle, the odometer reading, and the fuel level, and sends all photos directly to your WhatsApp. This protects you and the shop equally — there is no ambiguity about the bike’s condition at the time of pickup.

Fuel and Mileage

Mileage Limit

Each rental includes 250 km per day. This is not unlimited mileage — plan your routes accordingly. Makati to Tagaytay and back is roughly 130–140 km, well within the daily allowance for most trips.

Rent2Ride Manila does not offer delivery service. Pickup and return are at their Makati stall.

Fuel Policy

Return the bike with at least the same fuel level you received it at. Returning with less fuel is allowed — but refueling yourself before return is cheaper than the surcharge for letting Rent2Ride Manila do it.

If you receive a bike with low fuel: fill it within 10 minutes of pickup, photograph the receipt, and send the photo to Rent2Ride Manila via WhatsApp. They will reimburse the fuel cost.

Helmets and Gear

One helmet is included free with every rental. A second helmet is available for an additional fee (which varies by rental duration).

Rent2Ride Manila provides half-face helmets only — full-face helmets are not in the fleet. Half-face helmets fit nearly all riders and are legal and compliant with Philippine helmet law. Worth noting: many competitors’ full-face helmets run several sizes too large and are effectively unusable for most riders.

No tool kits or raincoats are provided. Bring your own wet-weather gear if you’re riding during typhoon season.

Other Policies Worth Knowing

Grace Period

Returning late by under one hour incurs no extra charge. Hourly charges apply after that — not a full extra day’s rate.

Early Return Refund

If you return the bike before your rental period ends, unused days are refunded. This is rare in Philippine motorcycle rentals — almost no other shop does this. Monthly-rate renters who return early are recalculated at the daily rate.

Paused Rentals

Rent2Ride Manila offers something unique in the Philippines: fractional and paused rentals. Rent for a month, pause the rental, and use the remaining days anytime — even spread across a year or more. No other known rental company in the Philippines offers this.

Island Travel

You can take the bike anywhere in the Philippines, including other islands. Rent2Ride Manila will assist with any required paperwork for inter-island travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a motorcycle in the Philippines?

Not at Rent2Ride Manila. A valid driver’s license from any country is accepted, provided it covers motorcycle use. Some other rental shops or police checkpoints may ask for an IDP — LTO rules under RA 4136 allow foreign nationals to drive on their home license for up to 90 days, but enforcement varies. Check with the LTO or your embassy to confirm your road compliance obligations.

Can I rent a motorcycle in the Philippines without a motorcycle license?

At Rent2Ride Manila, yes — with an additional ₱5,000 deposit. Be aware that riding without the correct license class on public roads is technically a violation under LTO rules, regardless of the rental shop’s policy.
